A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

Something Like a Spell.

The whole encounter had an otherworldly, surreal quality. Gabriel seemed to me almost as if he were in a kind of purgatorial state—like someone suspended between places, decisions, or versions of himself. At one point in our walk around Austin, in a vacant parking lot, I recited my poem “On Black Holes”. He did not strike me as someone who would appreciate poetry, but for some reason I felt called to do so—as though it were some kind of spell which would aid him in his spiritual journey.

BETWEEN TWO WORLDS

At the Edges of Worlds.

Move across each image—or use the arrow keys—to reveal the otherworld suspended in it.

An Austin house sitting quietly beneath live oaks and city lights after midnight.
“half past the square of midnight, we met—”
An exhausted young man sitting near the doorway of an Austin home late at night.
“a beautiful thing dropped deep in space—”
An empty Austin canal and bridge illuminated after midnight.
“an illuminated empty Austin
spanning both shores of the Styx,”
